This week we are heading back down into Hvar Town where winding along the paths we saw much beauty like ocean views, succulents, and blooming plants I cannot name. Surprisingly there were some I knew very well from my own garden in Virginia and because I was not expecting to see Lantana and Hydrangea growing in this tropical paradise I felt welcomed with these familiar blooms reaching out to me.
As you will soon see from my door collection this week, there were many wood doors with little embellishments. The final wooden door, my favorite in this series, does have an intricate and pretty iron door overlay making that grey paint pop.
This gated entry is for the Spanish Fort (Turdava Fortress), a well-preserved fortress winding up the northern hillside of Hvar that served as the primary defense and protector of the town and port. It’s construction began in 1282 under a Venetian ruled Hvar and was completed in 1551. During the 14th century spanish engineers worked on the fortress project and it is believed at that time the name Spanjola came to be. Today, the gate welcomes visitors to walk to the top to enjoy spectacular views of Hvar’s harbor and the Pakleni Islands.

And now head on over to Norm for his weekly hosting of Thursday Doors where you can explore more door photos taken by other door lovers from across the globe. Until next time…
What an interesting and lovely find!

Thanks Marian, Croatia should definitely be on your list of places to see. We had a wonderful visit, everything went smoothly from beginning to end, and I returned home well rested and full of good food, drink, and excellent memories of this beautiful place. Hope you go there soon.

Most excellent. I’m so glad you had a grand time hopping around the region I’ve always loved. The first time I was on the island Hvar was with my grandparents when a wee girl. They visited the island together every year until very old. The last time I was there was during my first (and only) sailing trip. Our sailboat was moored in a little bay. It was glorious. I could look at your photos from there forever. The last one is my favourite. ❤

It was a glorious day, the only sandy beach we found on our trip was here. The island was beautiful and I’m happy to bring you back to a happy memory Manja!
