Thursday Mercantile Doors #thursdaydoors

Happy New Year and cheers to another year of doors, courtesy of Dan of No Facilities. Thank you for keeping us all together in one space where we can share our new, old, repurposed, recycled, and newfound doors each and every Thursday. In mid-December I stumbled upon this building that sits rather close to the road, located on Blue Ridge Turnpike in Somerset, Virginia. As there was very little traffic, I pulled off the road to take a closer look at this wonderful old building and its doors. I'm calling it a mercantile because this is what first came to mind as I approached. Anyone else agree?
Upon a quick on-line investigation, ie Zillow, I discovered that this building was built in 1965 and is currently listed as a single-family home. Not satisfied with these few details that do not support my vision, I spent quite a bit of time Googling this address and area in hopes of a single historical nugget. Sadly, I still have no idea what this building may have been other than a family home. Boo.

Congratulations to the badge contribution from in primo piano-photos on winning our badge of honor for 2024! Here is the winning Thursday Doors badge we will wear for the next twelve months.
May 2024 be a great year for all of you door lovers around the world. Until next time...🚪

  1. I don’t actually know what you mean by mercantile- a former shop? It’s an interesting building anyway. I’d like a poke inside. Nosy me! Incidentally, I love your ‘secret of having it all is believing that you do’. Absolutely! And thanks for reaching out to me. Sunny in Virginia?

    • Yesterday was sunny, yes! Warmer temps than I’d like, but still lovely weather. By mercantile I mean an old country store that sold feed, food, candies, bolts of material, and maybe even housed a small post office. Imagine the era when a hitching post might be outside along with a handpump where you could draw water on a hot day.
