Packing Light

I attend yoga every Tuesday and Thursday. When I miss this class, which I try not to do, my body and soul feels the loss. I leave most classes with renewed strength. Over the years, I've had several instructors, each bringing her own essence to the practice. My practice today is by far my strongest and most fulfilling. My current teacher encourages us to explore our limits and it is our individual choice to follow her to the edge or remain seated in our comfort zone, both acceptable practices. Yesterday she slipped in an additional bonus that occupied my brain for the remainder of my day. She offered up this guidance:
"All you need is within you."

Such a basic yet encouraging sentence. Basic because there is no hidden concept or hidden message to decipher. Encouraging because it tells me I have the innate tools to 'figure it out'...whatever it may be. I suppose it can represent conflict, challenge, hardship, or myself.

Upon researching who is credited with this quote, I see that many individuals have said or written a version of this sentiment. After a deeper dive than expected, I'm appreciating how this belief can be expressed by many, but wonder are we all open enough to grasp its meaning? I assume we all may interpret this quote differently depending on our personalities and life experiences. I find power in these six words strung together. I'm not suggesting we perpetually move forward like a freight train, depending only upon ourselves, with no consideration of those around us. This would be arrogant and most likely a lonely existence. I do suggest seeking a healthy sense of self awareness.

Reflect before reacting.

Consider before concluding.

Expand before contracting.

This may allow for a more centered me in the face of conflict, challenge, hardship, or self-reflection, and all the while considering those around me. If much care is taken, my load may be less because I am packing lighter.

I am me.

You are you.

With respect for each other, grace naturally follows. Namaste.

  1. This is a beautiful post. I miss my yoga classes. I was going three days a week before COVID. Then I got off track and too busy with other workouts and activities. I do some yoga everyday but not a full workout. Thank you for the encouragement to get back to it.
