Thursday DC Doors #thursdaydoors

Here we are halfway through May and there is still time to find inspiration for your Thursday Doors Writing Challenge, hosted by Dan of No Facilities. Check out the photos submitted by various Thursday Doors regulars and see if one, or more, strikes your creative fancy. You can read more about this challenge here.

A few weeks back, my friend and I took a road trip north to lay eyes on a particular sculpture created by Edgar Degas. Many moons ago, this same friend and I thought we were visiting the original Little Dancer when at the Orsay museum in Paris. I’m sure we just assumed, its what we all do, right? Recently I came across an article entitled (something like) ‘there is only one original and we have it’. Of course, my interest piqued, I dove in to read further. Imagine my surprise when I read that the original Little Dancer statue lives only two hours away from me in Washington, D.C.’s National Gallery of Art. Simply said, I felt the fool. I grabbed my friend, fool that she is, and together we made our pilgrimage to set our story straight. We were not disappointed!

To further explain, the sculpture we saw in Paris was a bronze cast of this original, fabricated by Degas’ heirs after his death, and one of many exhibited around the world. This original, the sculpture in D.C., was formally exhibited in 1881 where it was met with much criticism. Degas never exhibited a sculpture again and why I was compelled to spend time with her, the original. She is stunning and I am very glad to know her.

While in the museum and elsewhere in the city, I met these doors that caught my eye. Perhaps not as staggeringly beautiful as the sweet ballerina, but still, noteworthy.

Thank you to my friend who willingly changed her schedule for our quick roadtrip and thank you always to Dan for hosting us door lovers each week. Until next time…🚪
